The Boston Red Sox had an eventful offseason, with chief baseball officer Craig Breslow playing a major role in both trades and free-agent signings. Despite bolstering the roster, Breslow’s primary target remains free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
Bregman, widely regarded as the best player still on the market, has surprisingly not been signed yet, potentially due to his contract demands. In 2024, the star slugger posted a .260/.315/.453 slash line with 26 home runs and 75 RBIs but appears unlikely to return to the Houston Astros.
The Red Sox are facing stiff competition for Bregman, particularly from the Detroit Tigers. To gain an edge, Boston has enlisted help from their newest acquisition, pitcher Walker Buehler. According to Greg Dudek of NESN, Buehler, who joined the Red Sox in December on a one-year, $21 million deal after winning a World Series with the Dodgers, has been actively recruiting Bregman all winter. The two share a close friendship and even co-own a horse.
The Red Sox are eager to add a right-handed bat to balance their lefty-heavy lineup. While they pursued Teoscar Hernández earlier in the offseason, he opted to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, Bregman is their top free-agent target, though Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado is also being considered as a trade option.
