The Boston Red Sox have taken steps to address their disappointing 2024 season, but they have yet to make a truly transformative acquisition. That could change if they manage to sign Alex Bregman in free agency, though recent indications suggest the Red Sox are gradually falling out of the race for him. Should they miss out on Bregman entirely, the team will need to make a significant move to salvage their offseason.
Cody Williams of FanSided recently speculated that Boston might aim for a blockbuster trade for rival superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr. if Bregman isn’t an option. However, this scenario depends on whether the Toronto Blue Jays would even consider trading Guerrero, which remains highly uncertain. Williams wrote, “The Red Sox have long seemed like a logical next destination for Guerrero, and it’s hard not to think some of Boston’s slower offseason moves under (Craig) Breslow are with an eye on Vladdy next winter. But they could accelerate that plan by offering a package centered around Marcelo Mayer and other top prospects. Despite the (Garrett) Crochet trade, Boston still boasts one of the league’s best farm systems, which could help Toronto start fresh post-Guerrero and Bo Bichette.”
While a trade involving Guerrero is unlikely, the Red Sox might emerge as serious contenders if Toronto does explore moving him. The Blue Jays may hesitate to trade a superstar within their division, but Boston could potentially offer the strongest package. Key names like Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu, Marcelo Mayer, and other prospects might be included to make a deal feasible. Could a Guerrero trade be on the horizon?
