The Boston Red Sox are in need of one or two impact hitters to position themselves as serious contenders for the 2025 World Series. One name previously linked to the Red Sox is free-agent infielder Alex Bregman. However, as time has passed, Bregman has become less associated with Boston and more connected to teams like the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers.
Cody Williams of FanSided suggests an alternative plan for Boston if they fail to land Bregman. He proposes the Red Sox target Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward in a trade this offseason. While not a blockbuster move, Williams believes it could still be beneficial.
“When you first look at Taylor Ward’s overall numbers, it’s understandable to feel underwhelmed,” Williams wrote. “He posted a .748 OPS last season and has a career OPS of .758 as he approaches his age-31 season. None of this screams the transformative addition many Boston fans are hoping for.
“However, Ward offers versatility on defense and has consistently excelled against left-handed pitching. Last season, his OPS against lefties was an impressive .873, and for his career, it stands at .805—nearly 50 points higher than his overall OPS.”
While Ward may not have the star power or impact of Bregman, he could fill an important role for the Red Sox. Of course, Boston would still need to make additional moves to complete their offseason plans. On the other hand, the question remains whether such a deal would make sense for the Angels.
