During the 2024 season, the San Diego Padres assembled a bullpen that performed slightly above league average. While contributions from players like Bryan Hoeing and Adrian Morejon were noteworthy, the real standouts were the trio of Robert Suarez, Jason Adam, and Tanner Scott.
Heading into the 2024-25 offseason, Suarez and Adam remain with the Padres and are expected to play key roles in the upcoming season. However, Tanner Scott is still a free agent. With the trade and free-agent markets rapidly evolving, there’s a strong possibility Scott will find a new team soon—perhaps within the next 24 hours.
Scott, 30, is a strong candidate for a reunion with the Padres, having been dominant in 28 appearances following a midseason trade from the Marlins. Reports from MLB Network’s Jon Morosi indicate that Scott is drawing interest from the Atlanta Braves and, in a worst-case scenario for San Diego, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The thought of Scott joining the Dodgers is a nightmare for the Padres. Already considered the most complete team in the league, the Dodgers boast an elite offense and a highly talented—if injury-prone—pitching staff. Adding Scott to their bullpen would not only strengthen an already formidable team but also present a constant obstacle for the Padres, with Scott potentially closing games against his former club.
Scott’s widespread appeal is well-deserved. The left-hander quietly established himself as one of the league’s most reliable relievers, finishing the 2024 season with a 1.75 ERA, 22 saves, and 84 strikeouts over 72 innings (10.5 K/9). He allowed only three home runs all year, solidifying his reputation as a dominant run-prevention specialist. Known for his strikeout ability, command, and ability to generate swings and misses, Scott has become a coveted asset.
While Padres fans hope for Scott’s return, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely. If he doesn’t re-sign, it’s crucial that another team—preferably not a division rival—secures him.
