A new era appears to be on the horizon for the New Orleans Saints.
After winning just five games in 2024, the team is currently without a head coach and faces significant salary cap challenges this offseason. As a result, major changes seem inevitable. The Saints must find a way to reduce payroll and get their finances in order.
Given their struggles, a rebuild wouldn’t be surprising. While the roster has talent, things simply didn’t come together last season. Speculation has already begun about the moves New Orleans might make.
Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report proposed a list of hypothetical trades to “reshape” the NFL this offseason. One suggestion involved the Saints trading three-time All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu to the Baltimore Ravens.
“Saints Get: 2025 fifth-round pick,” Davenport proposed. “Ravens Get: S Tyrann Mathieu. It’s no secret that the Saints could be looking to offload veteran players in a potential fire sale. “The Ravens excelled in many areas in 2024, but pass defense wasn’t one of them. They allowed the second-most passing yards per game in the regular season, and their secondary struggles contributed to their playoff downfall. Baltimore lacks the cap space to pursue top-tier free agents but remains in the middle of a Super Bowl window that may not stay open much longer.”
While purely speculative, the move makes sense. Mathieu is under contract for two years at $13.75 million, with an $11 million cap hit in 2025. If the Saints want to alleviate their financial issues, trading him could be a viable option. However, for now, it’s just a possibility.
