The St. Louis Blues will need to turn to the free agent market this offseason if they hope to elevate their game and break through the first-round barrier in the 2025-26 NHL playoffs.
Here are three key players the Blues should pursue to strengthen their Stanley Cup ambitions:
Sam Bennett
With the Florida Panthers leading the Stanley Cup Final 2-1 over Edmonton, Sam Bennett has emerged as a vital contributor and a strong candidate for the Conn Smythe Trophy. Set to become a free agent, Bennett should be the Blues’ top offseason target.
This past season, Bennett tallied 25 goals and 26 assists for 51 points, and he’s been even more impactful in the playoffs with 14 goals and six assists (20 points). Pairing him with Robert Thomas would give the Blues a formidable one-two punch down the middle. While he’ll command a significant contract, the rising salary cap could make this acquisition more feasible.
Dante Fabbro
The Blues have several uncertainties on the blue line, including the potential departures of Justin Faulk, Nick Leddy, and Ryan Suter, as well as the likely end of Torey Krug’s time in St. Louis. That creates an urgent need for defensive reinforcements.
Dante Fabbro, who posted nine goals and 17 assists (26 points) this past season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, could be a smart, long-term solution. A young defenseman with strong upside, Fabbro would be a suitable replacement if Faulk is moved, and a valuable addition to a rebuilding blue line.
Ryan Lindgren
Defense will be a major focus heading into next season, and Ryan Lindgren is a name that stands out. Known for his toughness and reliability, Lindgren would bring grit and experience to the Blues’ back end.
Having spent seven years with the New York Rangers before being traded to Colorado mid-season, Lindgren is battle-tested with playoff experience in a top-pairing role. He’s capable in all situations and fits the Blues’ hard-nosed identity—making him a logical and impactful addition for 2025-26.
