Toronto FC has announced that the club and winger have mutually agreed to part ways, with the team exercising one of its two available buyouts of a guaranteed contract to facilitate the move.
“Following conversations with Federico, we mutually felt that now was the right time to move on,” said Toronto FC General Manager Jason Hernandez. “We thank Fede for his efforts and contributions over the past three years and wish him the best as he continues his career.”
MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley added, “The Designated Player model remains a vital part of our success in MLS, and we will continue to focus on aligning our short-, medium-, and long-term strategies accordingly.”
Bernardeschi, 31, joined Toronto FC midway through the 2022 season and appeared in 88 MLS regular season matches. In the 2025 campaign, he tallied four goals and four assists in 15 matches and earned MLS Team of the Matchday honors twice. In 2024, he was selected for the MLS All-Star Game by Head Coach Wilfried Nancy. Across all competitions—including MLS, the Canadian Championship, and the Leagues Cup—Bernardeschi notched 26 goals and 22 assists in 99 total appearances for the Reds.
