Last month, the NCAA granted waivers to former JUCO players following Diego Pavia receiving an extra season at Vanderbilt, which proved significant for Virginia Tech linebacker Sam Brumfield.
As a result of that ruling, Brumfield gained another year of eligibility and declared his intent to enter the transfer portal for the upcoming season. A solid linebacker at 5-foot-11, 225 pounds, he soon found a new opportunity with a rising AAC program.
Sam Brumfield has committed to Memphis
On Saturday night, Brumfield announced on his X account that he will be joining Memphis in the AAC, a team that won 10 games in 2023 and 11 games this past season. He will provide veteran leadership to their linebacker corps.
Brumfield appeared in all 12 regular-season games for Virginia Tech this season, recording 60 tackles, a decline from his 82 tackles in 2023 with Middle Tennessee State. He also had 1.5 sacks and a key fumble recovery in the September game against Miami. Brumfield recorded a season-high seven tackles in three games—against Vanderbilt, Stanford, and Georgia Tech.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will have young linebackers like Caleb Woodson and Jaden Keller returning next season after strong performances in 2024, where they were at the top of the team’s tackle chart. As a Mississippi native, Brumfield likely saw his role diminishing after this season, especially with the firing of Chris Marve, which may have influenced his decision to transfer.
