The Washington Commanders had an impressive season with a new coaching staff and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels running the offense like a seasoned pro. The team finished 12-5 and made it to the NFC Championship Game, marking their best season since their 14-2 finish and Super Bowl win in 1991.
Although the Commanders fell short against the Philadelphia Eagles in the Conference Championship, the majority of the coaching staff will return next season. However, keeping the team intact wasn’t easy. Washington had to reject interview requests for assistant coach David Blough, who had a strong debut as the quarterbacks coach. The New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and Jacksonville Jaguars all wanted to speak with Blough, but the Commanders denied all three requests to hold on to their promising coach.
The Commanders keep offensive coaching staff in place
David Blough, a former quarterback who retired in 2023, joined the Washington Commanders’ coaching staff in 2024. Under new offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, Blough helped rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels adjust to the NFL, forming a strong connection with him. Thanks to Daniels’ impressive rookie season, Blough became a sought-after coaching candidate. However, he’ll stay in Washington for at least another year to see if the team can continue to grow in 2025.
Kingsbury, too, will return. Despite the New Orleans Saints showing interest in hiring him as their head coach, Kingsbury chose to stay with Washington. After a four-year stint with the Arizona Cardinals, he has rebuilt his coaching reputation with the Commanders, guiding them to a fifth-ranked scoring offense.
Blough previously played under Kingsbury in Arizona in 2022, and their positive relationship led Kingsbury to bring Blough onto the Washington coaching staff. Following a surprising successful season in 2024, all of the Commanders’ offensive coaches will be returning for 2025.
As for Daniels, he’s expected to become one of the top quarterbacks in the league next season. He also impressed in the playoffs, setting a rookie record for most passing yards in a postseason game. Tight end Zach Ertz, who was a key target for Daniels, will also return despite speculation about his retirement.
