West Virginia football has landed its first addition during the spring transfer portal window as the program continues to bolster its offensive line.
Per Chris Anderson of EerSports, the Mountaineers have secured a commitment from Mickel Clay, an experienced lineman who arrives at WVU with one year of eligibility remaining. Clay previously spent three seasons at FCS North Alabama following a stint at the junior college level.
Clay brings valuable experience to Morgantown, having started for a season and a half. After beginning as a backup at North Alabama, he took over the starting right tackle role midway through his second year and went on to start every game in 2024. He played 792 snaps last season and received a 77.0 grade from Pro Football Focus (PFF) for his performance.
Clay enters a deep offensive line unit that hasn’t seen many departures this spring. He becomes the fifth player along the line with just one year of eligibility remaining, suggesting he’s likely aiming for a major role this fall.
It remains to be seen who might be displaced in the starting lineup should Clay secure a starting spot. He joins Will Reed—another one-year transfer from the winter portal—and three additional senior transfers: Kimo Maka’neole, Ty’kieast Crawford, and Walter Young Bear, all of whom participated in spring ball and were featured as starters in the Spring Showcase. Redshirt junior Landen Livingston and redshirt sophomore Nick Krahe also took first-team reps, with Livingston getting most of his work at center—a position that needs to be settled early. If he remains there, it means at least one of the one-year seniors could end up on the outside looking in.
