The New York Yankees are looking for an infielder after Gleyber Torres signed with the Detroit Tigers. Right now, Anthony Volpe is slated to be the starting shortstop, with either Jazz Chisholm or Oswaldo Cabrera expected to start at second base. Despite this, the Yankees are aware they need to bring in additional talent before the season begins. Could Jose Iglesias be the solution?
Iglesias, who missed half of the 2024 season and all of 2023, had a strong performance during his time with the New York Mets, hitting .337 with 26 RBIs. He offers defensive versatility, capable of playing second base, shortstop, or third base. At 34 years old, he’s still capable of starting regularly, although the Yankees may prefer to use him in a platoon at second base. Iglesias is expected to earn just $1.7 million in 2025, a figure that fits well within the Yankees’ budget. In his last full season with the Rockies in 2022, he hit .292 with 47 RBIs. Since 2012, he has never finished a season with a batting average below .250, when he was still trying to establish himself.
Iglesias’ versatility would be an asset for manager Aaron Boone, allowing him to use him in different roles. Throughout his career, Iglesias has outperformed Gleyber Torres both offensively and defensively. While his age might be a concern, Iglesias is showing no signs of slowing down.
