Reflecting on the team’s mindset, McLellan noted, “I’ve been around teams that just don’t believe. This group cares. Sometimes, I think they care too much, tighten up, and hesitate to take their shot. That’s not necessarily a bad thing because it shows they’re invested. There’s passion on the bench, but also a lot of self-frustration. I’m not always sure that’s productive, but I think they’re buying in. I thought we skated much better tonight.”
Larkin’s Perspective
Captain Dylan Larkin, who notched his 25th goal of the season—becoming the first Red Wings player to reach that mark in four consecutive seasons since Pavel Datsyuk—shared his frustrations with the team’s recent struggles.
“It comes down to capitalizing on chances and recognizing how important those goals are, especially in tight games like this,” Larkin said. “Todd always says it’s a race to three. I had a couple of good looks in the first period, and we just need to finish those opportunities to take control.”
Larkin emphasized the need for improvement in critical areas, stating, “We need to score more and defend better. Right now, we’re not putting the puck in the net, and we’re not keeping it out of ours. At 2-2, they got the next one and then another. We had defensive lapses at the worst times, and we can’t afford that.”
