All indications suggest that Nick Pivetta is likely to part ways with the Boston Red Sox this offseason, but his next destination remains uncertain.
In November, Pivetta turned down Boston’s one-year, $21.05 million qualifying offer. As a result, if he signs elsewhere, the Red Sox will receive draft-pick compensation.
Many speculate that the Toronto Blue Jays might be his landing spot.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently predicted that Pivetta could sign a $40 million contract with the Blue Jays. Similarly, Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report projected on Monday that Pivetta would join Toronto’s starting rotation in 2025.
“The Blue Jays remain a sleeping giant after missing out on Juan Soto,” Reuter wrote. “While they might prioritize improving their offense, there’s also a strong case for adding another veteran arm to the rotation. Nick Pivetta declined a qualifying offer early in the offseason, meaning signing him will cost a draft pick, but his swing-and-miss ability could provide quality depth to an already strong staff. Last year, he posted a 4.14 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 172 strikeouts over 145.2 innings.”
Pivetta joined Boston in a 2020 trade with the Philadelphia Phillies.
While he spent most of his time with the Red Sox as a starter, Pivetta also proved effective in other roles, such as serving as a multi-inning reliever during the 2021 playoffs and a significant portion of the 2023 season. Overall, he compiled a 37-41 record with a 4.29 ERA and 1.243 WHIP over parts of five seasons with Boston.
