The NFL’s 2025 free agency period has brought significant shakeups, especially at quarterback. The New York Jets parted ways with Aaron Rodgers, while the Los Angeles Rams decided to retain Matthew Stafford.
The Seattle Seahawks traded Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders for a third-round draft pick, and the Minnesota Vikings declined to place the franchise tag on Sam Darnold. Meanwhile, Kirk Cousins is looking to leave the Atlanta Falcons after losing the starting job to Michael Penix Jr., but the team is hesitant to let him go.
With that in mind, Rodgers could follow a path similar to former Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. The four-time MVP is a potential target for the New York Giants, who currently have only Tommy DeVito under contract.
According to reports from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, the Vikings are also considering Rodgers as a short-term starter while J.J. McCarthy recovers from a torn meniscus suffered before the 2024 season.
Another option for Minnesota is re-signing Daniel Jones, whom they picked up late last season after his release from the Giants. Other available free-agent quarterbacks include Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Jacoby Brissett, Justin Fields, Joe Flacco, and Jameis Winston.
Favre, who began his career with the Atlanta Falcons in 1991, spent 16 seasons with the Packers (1992-2007) before stints with the Jets (2008) and Vikings (2009-10). Rodgers, who took over in Green Bay after Favre’s departure, now finds himself in a similar situation following Jordan Love’s rise.
