We should see more activity across Major League Baseball in the coming days.
With just one week remaining until pitchers and catchers begin reporting to Spring Training, excitement is building as the season nears. However, free agency remains in a strange phase, with many players still searching for new teams.
This offseason has been unusual, featuring brief periods of significant movement but long stretches of inactivity. Notable free agents still on the market include Alex Bregman, Pete Alonso, Kenley Jansen, Nick Pivetta, David Robertson, JD Martinez, Justin Turner, and José Quintana, among others.
Jansen, who spent the past two seasons with the Red Sox, remains unsigned, which is somewhat surprising. However, he’s expected to find a landing spot soon. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently compiled a list of the top remaining free agents and projected Jansen to sign with the Detroit Tigers.
“Jansen has saved at least 15 percent of his team’s games in 13 straight seasons and performed well last year at 36,” Miller noted. “Wherever he signs, he’ll want assurances that he’ll continue getting regular save opportunities.
“At this point in the offseason, though, finding a team that both has the financial flexibility and a need for a closer is becoming difficult. Maybe Detroit makes one more $15 million-ish acquisition? Prediction: Detroit Tigers.”
The Tigers shocked many by making a playoff push last season despite trading Jack Flaherty. They recently re-signed Flaherty and have been active this offseason, including signing Gleyber Torres. Jansen has expressed a desire to pitch for a contender, and with Detroit looking like a playoff team, this prediction makes sense.
