The Blue Jays remain without an outfielder to complement George Springer and Daulton Varsho for the 2025 season, while also seeking a strong hitter to bolster their lineup. This makes Spencer Steer a compelling option.
According to MLB reporter Jack Azoulay-Haron, the Reds have put Steer on the trading block, with multiple teams expressing interest, though none have been named specifically. Sources from @MLBNerds report that in addition to catcher Díaz, the Reds have made Steer available, drawing interest from several teams, including at least one from the AL East and one from the NL West.
Steer, 27, recently posted a 1.3 fWAR season and had a solid offensive year, hitting 20 home runs, driving in 92 RBIs, and achieving a .225 batting average with a .319 on-base percentage in just his third MLB season. He could not only enhance the Blue Jays’ offense but also fill their defensive gap in the outfield. Without acquiring another outfielder, the team would likely start the season with Joey Loperfido, who may not yet be ready for an everyday role in the majors.
Adding Steer would provide a valuable boost for the Blue Jays both in the short term and for the future. As a younger player, he could form a strong core with Varsho while Springer enters the latter stages of his career.
While no deal for Steer is imminent, pursuing him would be a forward-thinking move for the organization. If not Steer, Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins will need to find another outfielder to address the team’s pressing need.
