The New York Mets have been hit with multiple injuries to their starting rotation, with Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas both sidelined. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees also received bad news, as Luis Gil will be out for a few weeks.
With Marcus Stroman waiting in the wings, the Yankees could turn to him for help in their rotation. However, they have spent the offseason trying to offload his two-year, $37 million contract and may still move him if the right deal comes along.
Could the Mets be a potential trade partner after their recent injuries?
Jared Bloom of Sportskeeda believes so, predicting the Mets could make a move for the Yankees’ right-hander.
“The Mets have dealt with key injuries in their rotation, as Sean Manaea was shut down due to a right oblique strain, and Frankie Montas recently left the mound with discomfort,” Bloom wrote.
“Marcus Stroman could be an option for them. His role with the Yankees is uncertain, as their depth could push him into a sixth-man role or even the bullpen.”
Stroman Understands His Role With Gil Out
With Gil sidelined, the Yankees will likely stick with a standard five-man rotation. Even before Gil’s injury, Stroman appeared to be the odd man out, and now that possibility seems even more certain.
Despite the uncertainty, Stroman remains focused on performing at a high level. He also expressed his support for Gil, recognizing his importance to the Yankees’ success.
“That’s one of my guys,” Stroman told Greg Joyce of the New York Post. “Huge fan of Luis. It sucks, man. I don’t even know what to say. He was a huge part of this team last year—had an incredible season. We’re going to need him to get where we want. Hopefully, his recovery goes well, and we can get him back as soon as possible because he’s an elite arm we need out there.”
Do the Mets Need Another Starter?
Losing both Montas and Manaea is a significant setback, but the Mets’ rotation already had question marks.
On paper, the Yankees have the stronger pitching staff, but their success will also hinge on health.
Despite concerns about the Mets’ rotation, team executives have remained optimistic.
“I feel much better about our starting pitching depth today than I did a year ago,” Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns said, per Jorge Castillo of ESPN. “We prioritized pitching depth this offseason and brought in several arms at all levels of free agency.”
Mets owner Steve Cohen echoed that sentiment, suggesting they may not feel the urgency to add another starter just yet.
“I think our pitching is going to surprise people, despite all the talk about it,” Cohen said. “And we’re flexible. If we need to make changes or improve during the season, you saw what we did in ’24, and we’ll do it again in ’25.”
Whether the Mets stay patient or pursue an arm like Stroman could depend on how serious Manaea’s injury turns out to be.
