Negotiations between the Los Angeles Dodgers and free-agent outfielder have hit a snag, prompting president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and general manager Brandon Gomes to explore alternative options.
One potential option, the San Diego Padres infielder. According to a recent report by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Kim is viewed as “perhaps the most intriguing addition” for the Dodgers.
With Mookie Betts slated to return to shortstop, the Dodgers’ need for an outfielder has become more pressing than their infield needs. However, Kim is a strong defensive player who, once he recovers from labrum surgery on his right shoulder, could compete for a spot in the middle infield.
Kim earned his Gold Glove in 2023 as a utility player, primarily at second base. He was moved to shortstop during spring training in 2024, and teams are eyeing him as a potential addition at either position.
If the Dodgers sign Kim, they have several options. Betts could start the season at shortstop and then shift to the outfield once Kim is healthy. That would allow Tommy Edman to take over in center field, while Gavin Lux remains at second base. Alternatively, Edman could play in the infield at either middle infield position.
Though Kim had a rough 2024 offensively, finishing with a .233 batting average, 11 home runs, 47 RBIs, and a .700 OPS, his breakout season in 2023 saw him hit .260 with 17 home runs, 60 RBIs, 38 stolen bases, and a .749 OPS, earning down-ballot MVP votes.
Kim would provide valuable flexibility for the Dodgers’ infield. If Betts struggles early in the season, Kim could step in once he is healthy. Additionally, Kim’s Gold Glove caliber defense at second base would be an asset. Given his down year and injury in 2024, Kim may need to settle for a one-year deal, which could make the Dodgers an ideal team for him to rebuild his value before re-entering free agency next offseason.
