Despite being in the middle of the holiday season, college football news continues to roll in, especially with the transfer portal, player commitments, and NFL Draft declarations. This edition of Virginia Tech football news kicks off with updates on these topics.
A couple of weeks ago, when the transfer portal opened, a few Hokies entered it, which is a shift from last year when head coach Brent Pry managed to retain most of his players. This year, a few Virginia Tech players with eligibility have entered the portal and are gradually finding new teams. One of them, linebacker Keli Lawson, entered the portal on Christmas Eve and committed to Central Florida in the Big 12 on Tuesday night. Former Hokies cornerback Derrick Canteen also transferred to a Big 12 school, Cincinnati, last season.
After Virginia Tech secured bowl eligibility with a win against Virginia last season, defensive lineman Josh Fuga announced his return for the 2024 season. However, this year, the 6-foot-2, 313-pound Woodbridge native ended his Hokie career with 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks. On Wednesday, Fuga declared for the NFL Draft via his X account, marking the end of his time at Virginia Tech. Over his career, he accumulated 70 tackles and four sacks and was part of a defensive line that caused trouble for opposing offenses.
With Christmas now behind them, Virginia Tech is preparing to travel to Charlotte for the Duke’s Mayo Bowl against Minnesota in just a few days. The Hokies’ roster will look different from the team that defeated Virginia on Thanksgiving weekend, but this game provides an important opportunity for younger players to gain experience and help shape the program’s future.
