On the latest episode of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke shed light on the future of Leicester’s 21-year-old midfielder, who has become the subject of mounting Premier League interest.
The player previously had a £30million release clause in his contract at the King Power, but although that clause is now understood to have expired, a potential deal remains very much alive.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown revealed on 15 August that Leeds and Newcastle are among the clubs eyeing El Khannouss, with Crystal Palace also monitoring developments as uncertainty grows over Eberechi Eze’s future.
Tottenham and Arsenal are pushing hard to sign Eze before the deadline, and Football Insider reported last week that Spurs are now leading the chase following James Maddison’s injury. Palace are determined not to lose their star man unless his £68m release clause is met, but El Khannouss has been identified as a possible successor if Eze departs.
O’Rourke noted Leicester face a serious fight to keep hold of their young talent, who was one of the club’s standout performers last season. Despite the speculation, El Khannouss has started the new campaign strongly, registering a couple of assists on opening day.
“There’s going to be real competition for him,” O’Rourke explained, adding that Leicester may struggle to convince the midfielder to stay in the Championship with top-flight offers on the table.
Meanwhile, Eze might not be the only high-profile exit at Selhurst Park. Talks are ongoing between Liverpool and Palace over Marc Guehi, but a £40m asking price has slowed negotiations. Liverpool are hoping to strike a deal closer to £30-35m, with Guehi understood to be keen on an Anfield move.
