MANHATTAN, Kan. (KWCH) – Kansas State head coach Jerome Tang has landed a major addition to his roster, securing a commitment from the reigning MAC Player of the Year.
Akron guard Nate Johnson announced on Sunday that he’s transferring to Kansas State after spending three seasons with the Zips. He has one year of eligibility remaining.
Last season, Johnson averaged 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, shooting 44% from the field. Although he hit 42% of his three-point attempts as a freshman, that number dipped to 30% as a junior despite taking nearly twice as many shots from beyond the arc.
He posted a season-high 31 points in the MAC Tournament semifinal against Toledo and has made two NCAA Tournament appearances with Akron.
Star Power Incoming
Johnson, a 6-foot-4 dynamic playmaker, dominated the Mid-American Conference last season, averaging 19.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game while shooting 39% from beyond the arc. His versatility, scoring ability, and court vision made him a nightmare for opposing defenses and a top target for high-major programs looking for instant impact talent.
He helped lead Akron to a 24-10 record and a MAC championship game appearance, earning First-Team All-MAC honors in addition to the conference’s top individual award. Johnson’s clutch performances and leadership made him the focal point of the Zips’ offense, and now he brings those skills to the Big 12.

K-State’s coaching staff sees Johnson as more than just a scorer. His defensive tenacity and experience running the point give the Wildcats an immediate boost, especially in a league known for its physicality and depth of guard play.
“Adding a player of Nate’s caliber changes everything,” Tang said in a statement. “He brings toughness, leadership, and a proven ability to win. We’re excited to see how he fits into our system and helps elevate our program.”
With the departure of key backcourt contributors from last season, Johnson is expected to step in as a day-one starter and leader. His presence could also help accelerate the development of younger players while offering a steady hand in close games.
