A lesser-known starter for the Minnesota Vikings in recent seasons could be on his way to the New Orleans Saints.
While bigger names like Stephon Gilmore, Shaquill Griffin, and Dalton Risner are still on the market, defensive tackle Jonathan Bullard is also without a team — for now.
That could soon change. Bullard is reportedly visiting the Saints this week, according to ESPN’s Mike Garafolo, who shared that the veteran defensive lineman is meeting with New Orleans on Monday. Bullard has a prior connection with Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, from their time together with the Chicago Bears in 2017–18.
New Orleans, which ranked 19th in defensive EPA per play last season, is looking to strengthen its defense under new head coach Kellen Moore.
Bullard’s Run with the Vikings
Bullard joined the Vikings in 2022, early in the Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O’Connell era. Initially seen as a depth signing, he earned a regular role, starting 38 games and appearing in 46 over three seasons under defensive coordinators Ed Donatell and Brian Flores.
In his time with Minnesota, Bullard recorded 108 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, and three sacks. Known more for his run-stopping ability than pass rushing, he posted a 56.1 PFF grade in 2024.
How He Might Fit in New Orleans
The Saints currently have a crowded defensive tackle room, including Bryan Bresee, Davon Godchaux, Khalen Saunders, and Nathan Shepherd among others. Bullard would likely need to compete for a final roster spot, with a real shot at earning a DT3 or DT4 role.
Interest from Minnesota or the Jets?
Kyle Joudry of PurplePTSD.com recently speculated that Bullard could still return to Minnesota if injuries hit the defensive line. He described Bullard as a “bottom-six forward in hockey” — a reliable, physical player who does the dirty work well.
The New York Jets are another potential suitor. With over $27 million in cap space, the Jets could easily afford Bullard, who would come at a reasonable price. Last season, he posted one sack, 41 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, and three QB hits in 17 games.
Bullard, a former third-round pick by the Bears in 2016, will turn 32 in October and has also spent time with the Cardinals, Seahawks, and Falcons. New Orleans might also benefit from the presence of former Vikings safety Robert Blanton, now an assistant defensive backs coach for the Saints, as a familiar face in the building.
