Edmonton over recent years, but one particular offseason move prompted him to publicly share his thoughts.
While hosting his sixth annual charity golf tournament, the Oilers forward spoke about the team’s latest high-profile addition, who previously played for the Calgary Flames and spent last season with the Washington Capitals.
“We’re definitely familiar with him from his time in Calgary,” Hyman said. “He’s a gritty, competitive player who can find the net and isn’t afraid to battle in the corners.”
The new winger, 29, is joining the Oilers on a two-year, $7.2 million deal after tallying 28 points in 81 games last season. Despite a drop in offensive production, his defensive reliability remained a strong asset.
“He’s really the ultimate versatile player in our top six,” said Oilers GM and Executive VP of Hockey Operations Stan Bowman. “We’re not sure yet which center he’ll click with, but we expect him to play on one of the top two lines and contribute on special teams. His ability to fit in on the power play gives us valuable flexibility.”
There’s anticipation that he could line up alongside either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, depending on how the forward groups evolve.
“Overall, he checks all the boxes for what we’re looking for and will bring a lot to the team. He’s going to be a significant addition,” Bowman added.
Zach Hyman Shares Injury Update Ahead of 2025-26
During the event, Hyman also spoke about his recovery from a wrist injury sustained during the 2025 Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars. The injury, caused by a hit from Mason Marchment, involved a dislocation and multiple torn ligaments, which sidelined him for the Stanley Cup Final.
“It was tough not being able to play in the Final,” Hyman said. “You feel powerless. Watching from the sidelines was extremely stressful.”
After undergoing surgery in early June, Hyman has been in a wrist brace throughout his rehab. While there is no confirmed timeline for his return, he remains hopeful.
“If you set a date and don’t hit it, it’s disappointing,” he noted. “But I’m aiming to be ready for opening night.”
Last season, Hyman notched 27 goals and 17 assists in 73 games, along with 11 points in the playoffs. As Edmonton gears up for another postseason push, his impact at both ends of the ice will be vital.
