Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry had a productive Monday, securing commitments from three players. The day began with former West Virginia offensive tackle Lucas Austin joining the Hokies, followed by Mercer defensive tackle Arias Nash, and concluded with Eastern Michigan linebacker/defensive end James Djonkam committing to the program.
Djonkam, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound athlete from Springfield, Virginia, played high school football at West Springfield. After graduating, he spent a year at Independence Community College before signing with Arizona State, where he played for two seasons. Last year, he transferred to Eastern Michigan and had a breakout season.
At EMU, Djonkam recorded 98 tackles, including 11.5 tackles for loss and three sacks, earning second-team All-MAC honors. He chose Virginia Tech over offers from West Virginia, Michigan State, and others.
Initially, there was uncertainty about whether Djonkam would play linebacker or defensive end for the Hokies, but it now appears he will serve as an edge rusher. He is expected to compete for the role of replacing All-American Antwaun Powell-Ryland.
Djonkam is the 14th player added by Virginia Tech since the transfer portal opened, bringing them just two players shy of the number lost. While some departing players likely left in search of more playing time, the Hokies have been proactive in filling their roster and addressing key needs.
Virginia Tech is still active in the portal and may look to bolster the defensive line, offensive line, or wide receiver group. Djonkam’s addition is significant for the 2025 roster and marks the return of another Virginia native to the Hokies.
