Jordan Henderson is expected to part ways with Ajax this summer as he aims to maintain top-level football ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The experienced midfielder, who joined the Dutch club in January 2024, made over 50 appearances during his time in the Eredivisie. Despite his contributions, Henderson has chosen not to extend his contract and is now considering his next move.
At 35, the former England captain has attracted interest from Premier League sides and leading European clubs, with a potential return to his boyhood club Sunderland being discussed.
His next move could be pivotal in helping him stay in contention for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, despite his advancing age.
Henderson recently returned to Merseyside to mourn the tragic death of his former Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota, who was killed in a car crash last week alongside his brother, Andre Silva.

Henderson enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at Liverpool, where he won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, two League Cups, Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and Community Shield over a 12-year period.
He left Anfield in July 2024 to sign a three-year deal with Saudi club Al-Ettifaq, but his time there lasted less than six months before both parties agreed to terminate the contract. That exit led to his move to Ajax on a two-and-a-half-year agreement.
Since Thomas Tuchel took over as England manager in January, Henderson has featured in both of the German coach’s full senior squads. His upcoming club choice will likely be crucial in ensuring he remains part of the international setup.
With 84 international caps and three goals, Henderson has played in three consecutive World Cups—in Brazil, Russia, and Qatar. Although he missed out on the preliminary squad for Euro 2024 due to a brief absence from the national team, he returned earlier this year with appearances against Albania and Latvia and remains in strong contention for next summer’s tournament.
