The Boston Red Sox have already strengthened their pitching staff this offseason, acquiring key man via trade and Walker Buehler through free agency. However, there’s still room for further additions, especially with the abundance of expendable talent on their roster.
The San Diego Padres, reportedly open to offers for their ace Dylan Cease—particularly if they secure Roki Sasaki—could find an ideal trade partner in the Red Sox.
Boston might construct a deal headlined by first baseman Triston Casas to land Cease. Trading Casas would allow the Red Sox to move Rafael Devers to first base and pursue a replacement like Nolan Arenado or Alex Bregman at third base.

While Casas missed time due to injury last season, his trade value remains high. At just 24 years old and under team control for several more seasons, Casas boasts the potential for an .800 or .900 OPS, blending a powerful bat, solid athleticism, and consistent pop.
Richard Fitts, a promising pitching prospect, delivered a 1.74 ERA across 20 2/3 MLB innings last season, making him a suitable replacement for Cease. Mikey Romero, a 20-year-old former first-round pick, offers significant upside as an infielder, despite some struggles in 2023.
The Red Sox, with their deep minor league talent, are well-positioned to trade from their prospect pool in pursuit of a title push in 2025. If they can acquire a star like Arenado or Bregman to fill the void left by Casas, a deal to bring Cease to Boston makes strategic sense.
