After losing wide receivers and to the transfer portal, Dabo Swinney and Clemson needed reinforcements for Tyler Grisham’s position group.
On Monday night, the Tigers addressed that need by securing a commitment from wide receiver. Smith played for Southeast Missouri State in 2024, where he recorded 76 receptions for 934 yards. In the Redhawks’ final game — an FCS playoff loss to Illinois State — Smith stood out with 10 catches for 139 yards and a touchdown.
Originally from LaGrange, Ga., Smith began his post-high school career at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. During his two seasons there, he posted 16 catches for 231 yards over 10 games. Hutchinson CC is a powerhouse in JUCO football, having produced NFL talents like Alvin Kamara, Cordarrelle Patterson, De’Vondre Campbell, and Markus Golden. Notably, Malik Benson, another transfer portal receiver, also played there before stints at Alabama and Florida State.
Standing at 6-foot-5 and 205 pounds, Smith brings size to the Clemson receiving corps. While it’s believed he has one year of eligibility remaining, that detail has yet to be confirmed.
Clemson continues to recruit, awaiting a decision from 2025 wide receiver prospect Donovan Murph, who is expected to announce in the coming weeks. South Carolina is considered the favorite for Murph at this time.
Smith represents Clemson’s first non-reserve quarterback addition from the transfer portal in its six-year history. The Tigers remain active in the portal, with Purdue defensive end transfer Will Heldt recently visiting Clemson after trips to LSU and Texas A&M.
