The New York Yankees are reportedly still interested in acquiring eight-time All-Star third baseman from the St. Louis Cardinals. Despite $25.5 million annual luxury tax salary through 2027, the Yankees may find ways to navigate financial challenges to bring him to the Bronx.
A Deal Likely to Involve Marcus Stroman
To make the trade work, the Yankees are expected to include Marcus Stroman, who is set to earn $18.5 million in 2025. Stroman’s contract includes a player option for 2026 if he surpasses 140 innings pitched, adding a layer of financial complexity.
Including Stroman in the deal could help offset Arenado’s salary, though the Cardinals might need to cover a portion of Arenado’s contract to make the trade viable for the Yankees. Reports suggest the Cardinals were previously willing to absorb $15-20 million in a potential deal with Houston, which Arenado ultimately vetoed.
Arenado’s Production and Fit in New York
At 33, Arenado remains one of baseball’s premier defensive third basemen, even as his offensive output has slightly declined.
In 2024, Arenado played 152 games, posting a .273/.325/.394 slash line with 16 home runs, 71 RBIs, and a 102 wRC+. While solid, his power numbers may not translate fully to Yankee Stadium, as his hitting style favors line drives and fly balls to center and left field, areas less conducive to home runs in the Bronx.
Defensively, Arenado continues to excel. The eight-time Gold Glove winner logged six defensive runs saved and nine outs above average across 1,268.1 innings at third base in 2024. His elite glove work would solidify the Yankees’ infield and provide a boost to run prevention.
Positional Impact on the Yankees’ Infield
Adding Arenado would allow the Yankees to move Jazz Chisholm back to his natural position at second base, where his range and athleticism are best utilized. This shift would strengthen the infield overall, while Arenado’s reliability at third base would support the pitching staff’s efforts to limit runs.
Financial Considerations and Strategic Moves
The Yankees are already near the $300 million luxury tax threshold, meaning acquiring Arenado would require creative financial solutions. Trading Stroman or other players with significant salaries, such as Trent Grisham, could free up some payroll. Ultimately, the Cardinals’ willingness to absorb a portion of Arenado’s contract could be the decisive factor.

While Arenado’s offense might not be a perfect fit for Yankee Stadium, his defensive prowess and leadership make him a valuable addition.
