The New York Yankees are seeking a solution at third base, and one proposed trade involves acquiring a former top prospect. The idea is for the Yankees to move key man. to second base and pursue Jace Jung from the Detroit Tigers. FanSided’s Rucker Haringey suggests that New York could offer Clarke Schmidt in a trade package for the third baseman.
However, Haringey notes that the Tigers have shown no public interest in moving Jung, as they have him slated as their starting third baseman for 2025 and beyond. To acquire Jung, Yankees GM Brian Cashman would need to present an offer that significantly impresses Detroit. The Tigers are in need of more starting pitching, so including a player like Schmidt could entice them to negotiate. Jung would provide the Yankees with a valuable upgrade at third base, all while being on a cost-controlled salary for the upcoming season.
Haringey also points out that while Jung is a strong target, there are other young third basemen with potential who could be available if the Yankees are willing to part with someone like Schmidt. Although acquiring Jung would be a major risk, it’s the kind of bold move Cashman may need to make to build a championship-caliber team.
The Yankees would likely need to offer more than Schmidt to secure Jung, but the 24-year-old could have a significant impact at third base, while the Tigers would gain a controllable starter in return.
Yankees Have Talked to Bregman
The New York Yankees are in need of a third baseman, which is why FanSided’s Rucker Haringey suggests they pursue Jace Jung in a major trade. However, Yankees GM Brian Cashman has also confirmed the team has spoken to agent Scott Boras about Alex Bregman, the top free-agent third baseman.
Cashman acknowledged the possibility of adding Bregman, stating, “My job is to find a way to make us as quality as we can year in and year out. We’ll vet every opportunity out there. He’s been a thorn in our side for years, along with other people’s sides. He’s now into free agency. I’m sure he’s got a boatload of choices. Players like him make a lot of money. I have had a conversation or two with Scott Boras. I certainly respect the player and his ability and how much winning he’s been a part of. But, that’s as far as I’ll say at this point.”
Bregman, a two-time All-Star, is expected to command a substantial contract in free agency. If the Yankees are constrained by payroll, trading for Jung could be a more financially viable option.
Tigers Sign Gleyber Torres
On December 27, the Detroit Tigers made an addition to their infield by signing second baseman Gleyber Torres to a one-year, $15 million contract. Torres, who has spent his entire MLB career with the New York Yankees, is expected to take over as the Tigers’ starting second baseman. As a result, Colt Keith will move to first base, while Spencer Torkelson will either serve as the designated hitter or a bench bat for Detroit.
In 2024, Torres posted a .257 batting average with 15 home runs and 63 RBIs for the Yankees.
