The 2025 MLB regular season is drawing nearer, and several prominent free agents remain unsigned. One notable player still on the market, a longtime Baltimore Orioles slugger. However, the Orioles are unlikely to retain the switch-hitter after signing outfielder Tyler O’Neill to a three-year contract.
Santander has drawn interest from multiple American League East teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Boston Red Sox. Yardbarker’s Colin Cerniglia predicts that while the Red Sox may fall short in their pursuit of third baseman Alex Bregman, they could land Santander instead. “The Boston Red Sox will double down on offense, adding Santander’s switch-hitting power to their lineup,” Cerniglia stated.
Santander had a career-best season in 2024, posting an impressive .814 OPS with 44 home runs, 102 RBIs, and 91 runs scored across 665 plate appearances. His performance earned him his first All-Star selection, a Silver Slugger Award, and a 14th-place finish in the American League MVP voting.
Contract projections for Santander vary, with Spotrac estimating a five-year, $89 million deal and The Athletic’s Tim Britton suggesting a five-year, $105 million guarantee. Given his standout season and the dwindling options in free agency, Santander’s next contract could even surpass the nine-figure mark, depending on the level of interest from competing teams.
