Every year, as the new season approaches, MLB Pipeline shifts its focus to predicting breakout prospects for the upcoming season. In 2024, we highlighted names like Josue De Paula (Dodgers), Bryce Eldridge (Giants), Kevin McGonigle (Tigers), Jacob Melton (Astros), Lazaro Montes (Mariners), Travis Sykora (Nationals), James Triantos (Cubs), Ralphy Velazquez (Guardians), and Thomas White (Marlins). Each of these players ended the season on the Top 100 Prospects list.
As we gear up for 2025, we’re ready to take another shot at forecasting potential breakout stars. Here’s a look at one breakout candidate from each of the 30 farm systems:
AMERICAN LEAGUE EAST
Blue Jays: Sean Keys, 3B (No. 24)
A standout at Bucknell with a .358 career average, Keys carried his success into pro ball, hitting .293/.378/.451 over 22 games with Single-A Dunedin. The left-handed corner infielder answered some questions about his power and showed improved plate discipline. Any additional progress in his slugging could significantly boost his ranking within Toronto’s system.
Orioles: Emilio Sanchez, SS (No. 23)
Signed for $1.3 million last January, Sanchez was ranked No. 30 on the Top 50 international prospects list. The athletic, left-handed-hitting shortstop has the potential to develop as a strong hitter and remain at a premium position. A big 2025 debut in the U.S. could elevate his profile.
Rays: Theo Gillen, OF (No. 5)
Tampa Bay’s 2024 first-round pick, Gillen, has standout tools, including a smooth left-handed swing, above-average power, and improving speed post-knee injury. A strong first full season could push him firmly into Top 100 prospect territory.
Red Sox: Conrad Cason, RHP/SS (No. 15)
A two-way talent and 2024 eighth-round pick, Cason signed for supplemental second-round money ($1.25 million). With a fastball reaching 98 mph and 20-homer potential as a shortstop, the Red Sox face a decision on his primary role as he begins his pro career in 2025.
Yankees: George Lombard Jr., INF (No. 3)
The son of former MLB player George Lombard, this 2023 first-round pick is a well-rounded shortstop with high baseball IQ. In 2024, he hit .231/.338/.334 with five homers and 39 steals across two Class A levels. His potential growth in 2025 makes him a player to watch.
AMERICAN LEAGUE CENTRAL
Guardians: Welbyn Francisca, SS/2B (No. 9)
Following Angel Genao’s breakout in 2024, Francisca could be next. Signed for $1.375 million in 2023, he showcased a strong ability to hit from both sides of the plate, finishing 2024 with a .326/.411/.474 line, seven homers, and 19 steals across Rookie and Single-A levels.
Royals: Asbel Gonzalez, OF (No. 20)
Gonzalez’s elite defense and speed in center field give him a solid foundation. In 2024, he posted a .398 OBP and an 11.0% walk rate over 41 Arizona Complex League games. Developing more power at the plate could elevate his status, especially since he’ll still be just 19 in 2025.
