Six NFL head coaching positions have been filled, leaving just one vacancy. However, a clear frontrunner has emerged.
All indications suggest that the New Orleans Saints are set to hire Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the team has informed other candidates that they are no longer in consideration.
Moore is now the Saints’ top choice, but they must wait until after the Super Bowl to finalize the hire, as the 36-year-old is currently preparing for the Eagles’ Feb. 9 championship rematch against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Although Moore initially had concerns about the Saints’ quarterback situation, he has reportedly been assured that he will receive the necessary “time and support” to address the issue, per Russini.
New Orleans interviewed several candidates for the role, including interim head coach Darren Rizzi, former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn (who accepted the New York Jets’ head coaching job), New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, former Stanford head coach David Shaw, and Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver.
Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady and former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy opted to withdraw from the hiring process.
Kafka, Moore, and Weaver each had multiple interviews with the Saints. Additionally, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Moore is scheduled to meet with the Saints’ leadership following Super Bowl LIX.
