The Baltimore Orioles need to make key upgrades this offseason through free agency.
Pitching remains a top priority, but the team could also use a slight boost in their lineup. Retaining Anthony Santander would go a long way in helping the Orioles remain competitive in the AL East.
Team Needs (as of Dec. 19):
SP (x2), right-handed hitter, RP
Starting Pitcher: Jack Flaherty
Although some might see Jack Flaherty as a secondary option, his performance last season says otherwise. He posted a 3.17 ERA and a 3.1 WAR across stints with the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Dodgers. With a $21 million average annual value, he’s a great fit for the Orioles’ budget.
Starting Pitcher: John Means
John Means has struggled with injuries in recent years, but a return to Baltimore makes sense for both sides. When healthy, he’s proven to be an effective starter, as seen in 2019 and 2021. Means could sign a team-friendly deal, freeing up funds for other needs, including a power bat.
Outfielder: Anthony Santander
Re-signing Anthony Santander should be the Orioles’ top priority this offseason. With a lefty-heavy lineup, the team needs a right-handed power hitter, and Santander fits the bill after hitting 44 home runs in 2024. His projected $90 million contract might include a hometown discount, making him even more appealing.
Relief Pitcher: Jake Junis
Bolstering the bullpen is always a smart move, and Jake Junis offers excellent value at just $4.3 million per year. With a stellar 6.4-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 2024, Junis would strengthen the Orioles’ bullpen and improve their overall pitching staff heading into 2025.
