The New England Patriots are considering Ryan Crow, a prominent assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins, for their defensive coordinator position. Crow, who served as the Dolphins’ outside linebackers coach this past season, has a history with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, having worked with him for six years (2018-2023) when Vrabel was with the Tennessee Titans. Crow initially joined Vrabel’s staff as a defensive assistant, later becoming assistant special teams coach, and eventually outside linebackers coach.
In 2024, Crow managed a depleted linebacker unit in Miami, facing challenges due to injuries and retirements, including Bradley Chubb’s season-ending knee injury, Jaelan Phillips’ mid-season injury, and the surprising retirement of Shaq Barrett just before training camp. Despite these setbacks, Dolphins’ rookie linebacker Chop Robinson, selected in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, had a breakout year, contributing 26 tackles, six sacks, 14 quarterback hits, and four pass deflections, while primarily playing on passing downs.
If Crow leaves, it would add to the list of vacancies the Dolphins must fill, as they already need to hire a special teams coordinator and receivers coach following the firing of Danny Crossman and Wes Welker earlier this month. Additionally, defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver is also being considered for the New Orleans Saints’ head coach position.
