After Penn State’s dominant win over Arizona in November, it seems the University of Washington football team might have owed them a little something in return. Wide receiver Omari Evans could be part of that “payback.”
Needing a veteran wide receiver after the departures of Giles Jackson, Jeremiah Hunter, and the failed transfer of Texas’ Johntay Cook, Washington secured a commitment from Evans on Wednesday night. The 6-foot, 190-pound receiver, who hails from Texas, had a quiet showing in Penn State’s 35-6 victory over Arizona, failing to record any catches.
Evans, who has one more year of eligibility, comes off a season with 21 catches, 415 yards, and five touchdowns. His standout play came in the Fiesta Bowl and CFP playoffs, where he caught a 38-yard touchdown against Boise State, helping Penn State to a 13-0 lead in what would end as a 31-14 win.
Evans likely entered the transfer portal in search of a bigger role than what he had at Penn State. Over his career, he played in 38 games but only started six, tallying 30 catches for 564 yards and 7 touchdowns.
The wide receiver depth at Washington has been thinned since the season ended, and Evans may not be the only transfer addition. With Jackson and Hunter graduating, sophomore Keith Reynolds transferring to Miami of Ohio, and redshirt freshman Jason Robinson Jr. heading to North Carolina, the Huskies are making moves to address the position. Evans marks the 14th transfer for Washington, but only the fourth new offensive player. He joins the program just days after the departure of Cook, who spent only two days on campus before leaving.
Washington’s receiving corps will be bolstered by Evans and returnees like sophomores Rashid Williams and Audric Harris, along with sophomore Kevin Green Jr. (returning from a season-ending injury) and redshirt freshman Justice Williams, who struggled with injuries. Additionally, five incoming freshman receivers will join the fold.
