PITTSBURGH (AP) — Left-handed pitcher Caleb Ferguson has signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The team announced the agreement on Friday.
Ferguson, 28, holds a career record of 19-13 with five saves and a 3.68 ERA across 263 appearances with the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros. Last season, he split time between the Yankees and Astros, posting a 1-4 record with a 4.64 ERA.
The Pirates plan to explore stretching Ferguson out during spring training to assess his potential as a starter. Although primarily a reliever throughout his career, Ferguson has made 14 starts, mostly as an opener. His rookie season with the Dodgers in 2018 included a few spot starts, such as a five-inning outing against the Giants in just his second major league appearance.
Afterward, Ferguson transitioned to the bullpen, where he has spent the majority of his career.
Pittsburgh is looking to bolster its rotation, which features right-handers such as 2024 NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, and Jared Jones, by adding a left-handed option.
