Free agent pitcher Anthony Gose has landed with a new team, signing with the Arizona Diamondbacks after being quietly released by the New York Mets—a move first reported by Jon Heyman. Gose, once an outfielder who reinvented himself as a pitcher, had previously signed a minor league deal with the Mets and spent the season with their Triple-A affiliate before his unexpected departure. The details of his release remain unclear, with no confirmation on whether it stemmed from an opt-out clause or another contractual stipulation.
Gose had only limited major league exposure in recent years, most recently appearing for the Cleveland Guardians in 2024, where he logged just 4.1 innings and posted a concerning 10.38 ERA. The Mets had viewed him as a potential depth piece, particularly as a left-handed specialist, with hopes he might earn a call-up during the season.
An Unusual Exit
Gose’s transition to the Diamondbacks came with little fanfare, making his release from the Mets all the more unusual. No reports had surfaced about his departure until news of his new deal broke, creating confusion—especially in light of his decent performance in Triple-A.
While he had previously struggled in the majors, Gose posted a solid 4.30 ERA with 25 strikeouts over 23 innings in 21 appearances at Triple-A. He showed progress in several areas, notably improving his home run rate and inducing ground balls at a strong clip, which contributed to his overall effectiveness in the first half of the season.
Given the lack of transparency around his release—and considering the Mets’ ongoing bullpen needs—his absence from the big-league roster was unexpected. This was further magnified by the injury to Tylor Megill, who landed on the injured list with an elbow sprain, opening a clear opportunity for additional pitching support.
Although Gose’s performance had dipped slightly in recent outings, it still came as a surprise that he was passed over, especially when relief depth is crucial over the course of a demanding season.
While the exact reasons for the Mets’ decision remain unknown, Gose’s quick pickup by Arizona shows that there is still interest in his potential. His unique background and improving form could earn him a steadier MLB role with the Diamondbacks as the season progresses.
