EUGENE – The Oregon Ducks, led by coach Dan Lanning, have built a reputation for their aggressive and highly effective strategy in acquiring top talent through the transfer portal. Last year, the Ducks achieved the No. 3 overall transfer class and the top-ranked transfer class in the Big Ten. This year, they are once again on track to secure a top-tier transfer class.
Currently ranked No. 10 nationally in 247Sports’ 2025 transfer football team rankings, Oregon has already landed commitments from key players, including the portal’s No. 1 running back, Makhi Hughes, former USC defensive lineman Emmanuel Pregnon, and seven other highly regarded transfers.
One potential addition to their roster is Johntay Cook II, a five-star wide receiver from the 2023 recruiting class. Cook, who initially committed to Texas, mutually parted ways with the Longhorns after two seasons. On December 28, he joined the Washington Huskies under head coach and receivers coach Jedd Fisch. However, just weeks after his arrival, reports from On3 indicate that Cook is no longer with the program following a decision by Fisch to part ways with him after a meeting.
During his time at Texas, Cook recorded eight receptions for 137 yards and two touchdowns. His talent was expected to have an immediate impact at Washington, particularly as the team faced departures of other receivers to the portal and NFL Draft. Cook was their only wide receiver acquisition from the portal. Now back in the transfer portal, Cook’s skillset and eligibility make him a highly valuable prospect. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 185 pounds, Cook was ranked as the No. 29 player overall and No. 3 wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting class, per 247Sports Composite rankings. However, his outspoken and reportedly toxic behavior on social media has limited his options.
Oregon’s head coach Dan Lanning has emphasized the importance of character during the recruiting process, and Cook’s dismissals from two programs in such a short time could raise concerns for the Ducks. While Cook’s athletic ability is undeniable, his off-field issues may be a significant consideration for the coaching staff.
Despite Cook’s availability, Oregon is well-positioned at the wide receiver position. The Ducks have already added Malik Benson, a former Florida State receiver, through the portal, and have a solid returning group of receivers. Senior Evan Stewart is set to return, alongside promising players like Jurrion Dickey, Justius Lowe, and Jeremiah McClellan, who are expected to compete for starting roles following the departures of Traeshon Holden and Tez Johnson.
Given their depth at the position, it remains uncertain whether Oregon will pursue Cook. While his exceptional talent could strengthen any receiving corps, his history of off-field challenges may conflict with the culture Lanning and his staff have cultivated in Eugene. The decision will ultimately depend on whether the Ducks believe they can provide the environment and structure for Cook to succeed both on and off the field, while maintaining the program’s values and cohesion.
