Marc Guehi is set to remain at Crystal Palace despite a transfer agreement with Liverpool being reached on deadline day.
The 25-year-old England international had completed part of a medical after the clubs agreed a £35 million fee, and personal terms on a five-year deal through 2030 were reportedly in place.
However, head coach Oliver Glasner has been strongly opposed to selling Guehi this summer, insisting that the captain could only leave if a suitable replacement was found. While Palace secured teenage defender Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse ahead of Monday’s 7pm deadline, a move for Igor Julio—also linked with West Ham—fell through.
Although Liverpool submitted paperwork to extend negotiations, Guehi is now expected to stay at Selhurst Park, where his contract runs until the end of the season. Should he leave without a renewal, he would be able to join another club as a free agent.
Guehi featured in Palace’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, scoring the second goal. After the match, Glasner praised his professionalism and reiterated the need for him to stay. He emphasized that keeping Guehi is essential for a successful season, noting that an agreed-upon replacement has yet to arrive.
Since joining from Chelsea in 2021, Guehi has made 155 appearances for Palace, captaining them to their first major trophy in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City in May. He has also earned 23 caps for England, playing a key role in their run to the 2024 European Championship final.
Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam called Guehi’s retention “a huge boost,” highlighting the impact on the pitch and the manager’s approval. While Palace will forgo the £35 million fee, Glasner believes keeping the captain will enhance the squad’s performance and the value of the team’s players over the season.
