The Philadelphia Phillies may need to think outside the box to revamp their roster for next season. With a roster built around expensive veterans like Bryce Harper and Zack Wheeler, their options for retooling are limited following a disappointing playoff exit. This upcoming season could represent their last shot at a World Series run with their current core.
One tradeable, All-Star third baseman who still has two years of arbitration eligibility remaining. Bohm has been at the center of offseason trade, and Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report proposed a bold three-team deal that could send Bohm to the Seattle Mariners while bringing veteran Nolan Arenado to Philadelphia from the St. Louis Cardinals.
In the proposed trade:
- St. Louis sends 3B Nolan Arenado to Philadelphia.
- Philadelphia sends 3B Alec Bohm to Seattle.
- Seattle sends SS Colt Emerson (ranked No. 35 prospect by Joe Reuter) to St. Louis.
On paper, the trade appears to meet each team’s needs. The Cardinals could accelerate their rebuild with a high-upside prospect, the Mariners would gain a reliable bat, and the Phillies could improve defensively by replacing Bohm with Arenado.
However, acquiring Arenado isn’t without complications. Despite being a decorated 10-time Gold Glove winner, five-time Silver Slugger, and eight-time All-Star, Arenado’s offensive production has declined in recent years. Additionally, his remaining salary from an eight-year, $260 million contract signed with the Rockies in 2019 could be a sticking point.
Although Arenado is widely expected to be traded this offseason as the Cardinals rebuild with younger players, his no-trade clause complicates matters. He reportedly blocked a potential move to the Houston Astros but has shown interest in Philadelphia as one of his preferred destinations, provided the financial terms can be ironed out.
“For this to make sense, the Phillies trading away Bohm is a must, potentially as part of a rare three-team deal,” Miller wrote.
With both Bohm and Arenado likely to be on the move before Opening Day 2025, a swap involving these two players would be complex—but not impossible. The Phillies may find a way to make such a deal work if it aligns with their goal of contending next season.
