The Red Sox received some potentially encouraging news over the weekend.
Teoscar Hernández, who played a key role in helping the Dodgers win the World Series and earned a 2024 All-Star nod, reportedly wants to stay in Los Angeles. However, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, contract negotiations between Hernández and the Dodgers have stalled, leading the team to “explore a number of intriguing right-handed hitting alternatives.”
This opens the door for Boston, which expressed interest in Hernández last offseason and has renewed its pursuit now that free agency is underway. Signing him won’t come cheap, though, as Rosenthal reports the veteran slugger is seeking a three-year contract worth between $66 million and $72 million.
That said, the Red Sox might not need to meet those exact terms to land Hernández. If such offers were on the table, the 32-year-old likely wouldn’t still be exploring free agency over a month later. For now, Hernández and fellow power-hitting outfielder Anthony Santander appear to be waiting to see which team makes the next move.
If Boston does manage to sign Hernández, the deal might carry less risk compared to other high-profile contracts. Hernández has excellent career offensive numbers at Fenway Park and would likely be solid defensively in left field.
The question now is how much the Red Sox are willing to invest in Hernández at this stage of his career.
