The Cincinnati Reds are bringing back catcher Andy Yerzy, a name some may recognize from his previous stint in the Reds organization. However, if the name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s understandable—Yerzy only appeared in 17 minor league games for Cincinnati’s farm system back in 2023.
Following the 2024 season, the Reds lost significant catching depth across Double-A, Triple-A, and the majors due to free agency. They’ve been steadily rebuilding, with Yerzy joining Austin Wynns and Will Banfield as recent minor league signings for 2025. The team also signed Alex Jackson earlier in the offseason, but he was traded to the Yankees in the deal that brought Jose Trevino to Cincinnati in December.
Yerzy’s 2023 season with the Reds was limited, as he spent much of his time on the development list with Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Louisville. This designation allows players to practice and travel with the team without being on the active roster or eligible to play in games. Despite being healthy, Yerzy saw action in only 17 games that year, posting a solid .235/.371/.529 slash line before being released in mid-August.
In 2024, Yerzy signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, where he played a backup role in Double-A, catching 22 games during the first half of the season. He then spent three months on the development list before appearing in one Triple-A game with Nashville in late September.
Yerzy’s return to the Reds appears to be for a similar role, likely serving as a third catcher at the Double-A or Triple-A level with limited playing time. However, he adds valuable depth to the organization, providing insurance in case injuries create opportunities for movement within the farm system.
