The Boston Red Sox are determined to break their three-year postseason drought by strengthening their roster this offseason.
They’ve made a strong start by trading for left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet to bolster their rotation. However, adding a major offensive piece, like former Houston Astros star Alex Bregman, would be a game-changer.
Bregman could be a realistic target for Boston, especially after the Astros signed three-time Gold Glove first baseman Christian Walker to a three-year, $60 million deal. This move decreases the likelihood of Bregman re-signing with Houston and opens the door for the Red Sox to pursue him in their bid for a 10th World Series title in 2025.
“Agent Scott Boras mentioned during the annual general managers’ meetings in November that Bregman would consider moving to second base under the right circumstances, and the Red Sox might be that ideal fit,” Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter noted, ranking Boston as the second-best landing spot for Bregman.
While signing Bregman would block top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell from regular playing time, the Red Sox could potentially leverage those prospects as trade assets to further strengthen their roster, Reuter added.
Acquiring Bregman would require a significant investment, with MLB Trade Rumors projecting a seven-year, $182 million deal. Adding the two-time World Series champion would help offset the loss of Tyler O’Neill, who recently signed a three-year contract with the AL East rival Baltimore Orioles.
For Boston to secure Bregman, owner John Henry will need to make a bold financial commitment. Ideally, the Red Sox could land him without sacrificing Mayer or Campbell, but regardless, making such a splash would be a strong move toward re-establishing themselves as contenders.
