The New York Yankees have shifted to their backup plan after failing to re-sign star outfielder Juan Soto, and it’s already showing promise. In recent weeks, they’ve bolstered their roster by adding Max Fried and Devin Williams, with more free-agent signings reportedly in the works. One of the top players on their radar is first baseman Christian Walker, who could address a significant gap at first base for manager Aaron Boone. Reports suggest the Yankees are the frontrunners to sign Walker, but not everyone is convinced.
According to Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller, Walker may ultimately pass on the Yankees and instead sign a three-year, $75 million deal with the Washington Nationals. Miller noted, “The Yankees seem like the logical fit given their first-base situation, but this could be an excellent opportunity for the Nationals to make a splash, even if it requires a modest overpay. Washington has long needed a first baseman, and Walker could provide veteran leadership for a team where only closer Derek Law (34) and reserve outfielder Alex Call (30) aren’t in their 20s.”
For the Nationals, luring Walker away from the Yankees would likely require an even bigger offer, but it could be a transformative move. Washington’s young core is already brimming with talent, and Walker’s steady presence could bring valuable experience to a clubhouse filled with rising prospects.
