The Philadelphia Phillies gave their fans a holiday surprise by trading for pitcher, bolstering their starting rotation depth. With this addition, questions arise about the future of left-hander Ranger Suárez. Suárez, who earned his first All-Star nod in 2024, has been a full-time starter since 2022. He had a strong 2024 season, finishing with a 12-8 record, a 3.46 ERA, a 1.20 WHIP, and 145 strikeouts over 150 2/3 innings.
While Taijuan Walker is widely seen as the most likely candidate to exit the Phillies’ 2025 rotation, FanSided’s Edward Eng suggests Suárez could also be on the trade block. Eng noted that Suárez’s performance dipped in the latter half of 2024 due to durability concerns. Furthermore, the Phillies’ decision to extend Cristopher Sánchez but not Suárez hints at a lack of long-term commitment. Adding to the speculation, Suárez recently switched agents to Scott Boras, known for negotiating lucrative deals, making an extension unlikely before he hits free agency after the 2025 season.
Suárez is projected to earn $11.3 million in 2025, with Spotrac estimating his market value for a long-term deal at five years and $94.7 million.
