The Detroit Red Wings are in the midst of a playoff push, and one trade proposal suggests they acquire a star forward to bolster their lineup.
PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool allows fans to craft their own trade scenarios, and one user suggested a deal in which the Red Wings trade for Brock Nelson from the New York Islanders.

The trade makes sense, as Detroit would gain a proven scorer in Nelson in exchange for Veleno, an NHL forward, and a second-round draft pick.
Nelson, in the final year of his six-year, $36 million contract, is one of the top trade targets as the deadline approaches. He would immediately slot into Detroit’s top six and provide an offensive boost. This season, he has played 59 games, tallying 19 goals and 22 assists for 41 points.
In return, the Islanders would receive a second-round pick and Veleno, a 25-year-old former first-round selection who could benefit from a fresh start. Veleno has recorded 5 goals and 5 assists for 10 points in 55 games and is in the first season of a two-year, $4.55 million contract.
Will the Islanders Trade Nelson?
Despite being out of the playoff picture, it’s uncertain whether the Islanders will move Nelson, as they may try to re-sign him.
According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, rival teams are unsure of New York’s plans for Nelson.
“Another big name teams are monitoring is Brock Nelson—a pending UFA—and he’s holding up a lot of trade discussions,” LeBrun said. “Many teams are looking for center help, and he’s a top target. But the Islanders haven’t made it clear whether he’ll be available, as they’re still hoping to re-sign him.”
Nelson has spent his entire 899-game NHL career with the Islanders.
Red Wings in a Tight Playoff Race
Detroit is currently battling for a Wild Card spot, holding a 30-24-6 record.
Veteran forward Patrick Kane emphasized the team’s focus on staying composed as they push for the postseason.
“You take it as a challenge,” Kane said. “Under Todd, we’ve built a foundation where we know what to expect, and we feel confident about it. We’re taking it one game at a time.”
Head coach Todd McLellan echoed that sentiment, urging the team to focus on the present rather than the standings.
“I don’t want them getting caught up in win streaks or losing streaks,” McLellan said. “Live in the moment, put the equipment on, and handle the game from start to finish.”
Detroit will be back in action on March 4 against the Carolina Hurricanes.
