During his opening remarks at Monday’s press conference, Curt Cignetti told reporters that Indiana is “in a good spot.” He’s correct—at 11-1, Indiana still has over a 70% chance to make the playoffs, and that probability rises to over 90% if they defeat in-state rival Purdue (1-10) this weekend.
Another reason Cignetti is confident is that both he and his staff are committed to staying in Bloomington for the foreseeable future.
Indiana recently announced Cignetti’s new contract, which guarantees him $72 million and runs through the 2032 season. To fire him, the Hoosiers would need to pay 85% of the remaining salary on the contract. If Indiana reaches the College Football Playoff in any season during the contract’s term, the buyout increases to 100% of the remaining salary, ensuring Cignetti has significant job security.
If Cignetti were to leave for another job after this season, Indiana would reportedly be owed $13 million. If he leaves after the 2026 season, the Hoosiers would be owed $10 million.
Cignetti’s base salary is set at $500,000 annually, with an additional retention bonus of $1,000,000 each year. Most of his income, however, comes from outside sources, including marketing and promotional deals, according to Indiana Hoosiers on SI.
