Alabama transfer forward Jarin Stevenson is returning home, committing to the University of North Carolina through the NCAA Transfer Portal, as reported by On3’s Joe Tipton. The Chapel Hill native will have two years of eligibility remaining.
The 6-foot-11, 215-pound junior-to-be officially entered the portal on April 9 with a “do not contact” designation, suggesting he had already decided on his next destination. That destination, as it turns out, is his hometown school.
Stevenson started 27 of his 74 games over two seasons at Alabama, including 22 starts in 37 appearances during the 2024-25 campaign. He averaged 5.4 points on 42.9% shooting, 3.4 rebounds, and played 18.7 minutes per game this past season. Across his career in Tuscaloosa, he posted averages of 5.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 0.6 assists, while shooting 42.5% from the field, 31.2% from beyond the arc, and 63.6% from the free-throw line.
A four-star prospect in the Class of 2023 from Seaforth High School in Pittsboro, N.C., Stevenson was rated as the top player in North Carolina, the No. 4 power forward nationally, and the No. 21 overall recruit according to the On3 Industry Ranking. While UNC was heavily favored to land him out of high school, he initially chose to sign with Alabama and head coach Nate Oats. His mother, Nicole Walker Stevenson, played for the Tar Heels from 1995-98, winning three ACC titles.
UNC is aiming to bounce back after a disappointing 2024-25 season, where the Tar Heels (23-14, 13-7 ACC) barely secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament as the final team in the field. They defeated San Diego State in a First Four matchup but were eliminated in the first round by Ole Miss, 71-64.
