With only days remaining before the start of Spring Training, the Boston Red Sox have yet to add a significant right-handed bat.
However, they still have a few avenues to explore, including pursuing free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman, a player they’ve been linked to throughout the offseason.
Although Bregman reportedly has multiple offers that surpass Boston’s, including one from his former team, recent comments from Astros general manager Dana Brown have fueled speculation that Bregman may not return to Houston.
As reported by The Athletic’s Chandler Rome, Brown referred to Bregman in the past tense during Houston’s annual media luncheon, even stating that the team had “lost Bregman.”
Despite this, Red Sox fans shouldn’t get their hopes up just yet. Bregman is still in discussions with multiple teams, and Brown later clarified that negotiations are ongoing because he remains on the market.
If Boston is serious about landing Bregman, they may need to step out of their comfort zone—something they’ve been reluctant to do this offseason. On the other hand, if top prospect Kristian Campbell is ready to make an early debut at second base, that could prove to be a more sustainable long-term solution.
