JUST IN: ASU RB announce departure to Sun Devil

After standout running back Cam Skattebo declared for the NFL Draft following a standout 2024 season, Arizona State University (ASU) is seeing a highly competitive race to fill his spot in the backfield. Skattebo’s remarkable contribution of 1,398 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns played a crucial role in ASU’s offensive success last season.

In response to this loss, ASU has actively recruited talent via the transfer portal, securing key players like Kanye Udoh, a junior transfer from Army. Udoh, who rushed for 1,117 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, brings a similar physical running style to Skattebo’s, making him a top contender for the starting role.

The competition is fierce, with several returning players in the mix. Junior Kyson Brown, who had notable performances late last season, including a 27-yard run against the University of Arizona, is a strong contender thanks to his speed and versatility.

Redshirt junior Raleek Brown, a transfer from USC, offers additional flexibility, with experience as both a running back and wide receiver. While he was hampered by injuries last season, he’s expected to contribute significantly.

Freshman Jason Brown and redshirt junior Alton McCaskill, a transfer from Colorado, further strengthen the running back group. McCaskill, who had an impressive freshman season at Houston with 961 yards and 16 touchdowns, is recovering from injuries and eager to return to form.

Under the guidance of head coach Kenny Dillingham and running backs coach Shaun Aguano, ASU’s coaching staff emphasizes the value of depth and healthy competition within the group. Aguano noted that a deep roster keeps players fresh and enhances performance throughout games.

As spring practices continue, the fight for the starting running back position is a key point of focus, with the varied skills and backgrounds of the candidates ensuring a dynamic and well-rounded backfield for the upcoming season.
